Parade Inspiration
Tips for planning your float
Tip #1: People Propulsion
This year’s parade will be held on the Kerikeri Domain. Participants will walk, ride, dance their way around a central track on the rugby field with the public watching from the sidelines. For this reason we will not have vehicles in the parade. People powered propulsion is the focus – this includes bikes, scooters, baby buggies, wheelchairs, wheelbarrows, carts etc. We will make allowances for mobility scooters but please advise us early if you are using these.
Tip #2: Think ‘Group’
Think about not only how you will look as an individual but how your creation compliments the group as a whole. You will be judged as a group so look at the big picture as well as the finer details. Sometimes choosing a colour theme can help make the group look cohesive. Maybe you are all individual parts that come together to make a bigger creation ie: Birds in a nest.
Tip #3: Height
Think about height. You will be walking at ground level, not on the back of a truck, and the audience will be on the same level. Think about adding some height to your creation so it can be seen above the crowd. Remember this has to be carried a long way so make sure you can last the distance. Also think about upscaling your costume to make you look bigger. A wider head-dress, taller tail feathers or bigger wings etc.
Tip #4: Recycle
Recycling is great. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on buying materials. See what you have already and get creative in how you use it. Make sure you think about the end use for your costume. Is this going to go straight into a landfill? Can it be re-used or re-cycled?
Tip #5: Make it Personal
Think about the garden theme and what it means to you. Christmas tends to be shiny and sparkly and colourful but here in NZ we also have nature and outdoor activities. Your garden might be your backyard or thebush or the farm or the sea. It might mean camping or picnics. The theme has many interpretations.
